On August 25, both Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus released their new singles. Gomez’s new track “Single Soon” is a dance track about someone who is looking forward to dumping their partner, and Cyrus shared “Used to Be Young,” which is more of a ballad about nostalgia. While talking to PopCrush Nights host Donny Meacham, Gomez shared how she found out that they’d double-booked and what her response was to the news.
The news came to Gomez several months before the release.
“It was probably a few months ago, so then it was like, ‘Awesome,’” Gomez explained. “We’re both so supportive of each other, I love her so much. It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, we must change it,’ we should embrace it and make it a moment.”
The pair are old friends and ended up making a joke of the moment on Instagram. Gomez shared a clip from Cyrus’ hit Disney series Hannah Montana where she played her musical rival Mikayla Skeech. In the scene, Mikayla calls Hannah while sitting at a telethon and makes fun of her new single.
“Hey, what’s up? It’s Hannah Montana. What would you like to give?” Cyrus says after answering the phone.
“I’d like to give you singing lessons. Just heard your new single, ouch,” Gomez answers.
“@mileycyrus and I both have a SINGLE SOON and we are releasing on the same day,” Gomez wrote over the post. “We have been friends since we USED TO BE YOUNG. Excited for August 25th!”
Cyrus shared the video as well, writing, “Selena and Miley announcing new singles within 1 hour of each other.”
Later, Cyrus explained why she chose the date, saying, “I decided to release ‘Used to be Young’ on August 25 because this particular date historically has been important to me personally and in my career.”
