These Were Adele’s Best SNL Sketches

Last night, Adele blessed us with her presence as the host of Saturday Night Live, and from the first moment of her monologue, it was clear she was going to blow us away with her star power, as per usual.

She kicked off her monologue by thanking Sarah Palin (yes, Sarah Palin) for being on the show 12 years ago when Adele Adkins made her musical debut and became superstar Adele. “I don’t want to get too political, so I’ll just say this: Sarah Palin, babes, thanks for everything, yeah?” Just as she’s been doing in her Instagram comments, she was also sure to let fans know that she is not done with her album, which was the main reason she passed on being the musical guest.

“I’d rather just put on some wigs, and this is all mine by the way,” she said, showing off her long blond locks, “have a glass of wine or six and see what happens.”

Another monologue highlight? When she brilliantly took back the narrative of her weight loss: “I know I look different than when you last saw me, but because of the COVID restrictions I had to travel light and bring only half of me, so this is the half I chose.” (Please come to my TED talk later about why the only people who should comment on bodies are the ones who are in them).

She also touched on one thing in particular she’s known for: Her dirty mouth. “I’m nervous, you know what I’m like; I always get very nervous on live TV, and tonight especially so, because I swear a lot—a lot, a lot.” Cue Keenan Thompson with a giant swear jar already full of Adele’s cursing offenses.

Swear jar or not, Adele, we love you. Here were some of the highlights from her night as host.

The Bachelor

As someone who is very invested in The Bachelor franchise, for better or for worse, I have to say: This sketch was the best of the night. Adele appeared, as herself, a 32-year-old bachelorette who is looking for love. Except she’s Adele, and the bachelor, Ben K. (Beck Bennett) and everyone else on the show is terrible.

This sketch was also the vehicle for her to belt out some of her hits, including “Someone Like You” and “Hello.” I know Clare’s season is truly supposed to be “the most dramatic one yet,” but I’d still opt for Adele on this show anytime.

Chad in a Haunted Mansion

This sketch appeared to be a shout-out to Rebecca, except Pete Davidson is a man named Chad who is unfazed by a ghostly Adele’s appearance. “It wasn’t suicide, Chad, it was murder!,” Adele says to a very simple Chad. “OK,” he replies.

Kate McKinnon and Adele should always team up. This sketch wasn’t the funniest by far, but the fact that Adele couldn’t keep it together without breaking absolutely makes it.

Madame Vivelda

McKinnon as a psychic who tries to warn Adele and her friends about 2020 is the sketch that we’ve needed since this whole pandemic thing started. Thank God we aren’t all washing bags of Doritos anymore.
