The Star Wars galaxy just keeps getting bigger. Following titles like Andor and The Mandalorian in recent years, The Acolyte is the latest addition to the franchise on Disney+. Set during the High Republic era—about 100 years before The Phantom Menace, according to The Wrap—the new series follows Jedi Master Sol (Squid Games’ Lee Jung-jae), who is tasked with hunting down his former Padawan Mae (Amandla Stenberg from Bodies Bodies Bodies) after she becomes the suspect for a string of Jedi murders.
Stenberg, a longtime Star Wars fan, opened up about what it was like joining the action-packed series, which is show-run by Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland. (According to Empire magazine, Stenberg did martial arts training for seven weeks.)
“I got Leslye’s conceptual tagline that she’s been sharing, which is that it was a mixture of Frozen and Kill Bill. Which immediately sucker-punched me, because Kill Bill is one of my favorite movies,” she told Empire. “Going into filming, Leslye held a screening for the entire cast and crew of Kill Bill. And then I was told that it would be at the height of the High Republic era—which was so interesting to me, because I feel like the further back you go in Star Wars lore, the more fascinating it gets, and the more concepts people within Lucasfilm have started to dig into and explore. It creates a really rich, fascinating web.”
