Former Saturday Night Live cast member Kyle Mooney brings 1999 nostalgia to life in his directorial debut horror comedy, Y2K, which is now playing in theaters.
The film is set on the last night of 1999, where high school juniors Eli (Jaeden Martell) and Danny (Julian Dennison) crash a New Year’s Eve party. According to Variety, when midnight strikes, the “Y2K apocalypse” triggers technical malfunctions that turn electronic devices and appliances at the party into weapons. The chaos escalates when the glitching machines merge into a deadly robot, and the turn-of-the-millennium celebration quickly turns into a fight for survival.
According to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Mooney also co-wrote the film with Evan Winter and stars in it. The rest of the Y2K cast includes Snow White’s Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, Deadpool 2’s Julian Dennison, The Kid Laroi, Lachlan Watson, Clueless’s Alicia Silverstone, and Fred Durst, per Entertainment Weekly.
Mooney has also explored ’80s and ’90s nostalgia in his Netflix comedy Saturday Morning All Star Hits. Reflecting on revisiting that theme for Y2K, Mooney told The Hollywood Reporter, “There are those Easter eggy period things that maybe only those of us who lived through it will catch, but…there is enough universality to the experience of high school life that’s relatable.”
How can you stream Y2K?
A24 has yet to announce an official streaming date for Y2K. However, it is expected to eventually stream on Max, since A24 has an existing partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, according to Collider. Past A24 films have also landed on Max, like Priscilla and Lady Bird.
