Whether you consider Lil Nas X’s hit “Old Town Road” hip-hop, country, or a hybrid of the two, one thing everyone can agree on is that the earworm is hard to eject from our brains—but who’s complaining? Justin Bieber said it best: “This shit bangs.” And after the rapper added the legendary Billy Ray Cyrus to the mix, it banged even more. Adding to the hype, Lil Nas X delivered on his promise and released the viral hit’s official music video on Friday.
Billed as an Old Town Road movie, the video clocks in at five minutes and is set in 1889 in, well, Old Town Road. Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus play cowboys who successfully escape from their enemies, comedians Chris Rock and HaHa Davis.
Lil Nas X gets away with a bag of money and rests for a moment with Billy Ray until they’re spotted by a nearby family, prompting Nas X to dive into a dark tunnel that turns out to be a time travel loop. Next thing you know, he’s here in the year 2019. But how did the horse get there?
The rapper recruited a gang of random celebrities to appear in the video. When Nas X arrives in the present day, he ends up racing against rapper Vince Staples. “I seen you before. You’re from Compton right?” Staples asks him.
Then he changes into a sparklier cowboy ensemble and meets up with present day Billy Ray, who is also dressed in a jazzed-up pink number, before they head to the town hall, where rapper Rico Nasty is playing bingo.
Diplo’s there, too:
