Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Reveal They Secretly Married Three Days Before Their Royal Wedding

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry dropped a lot of bombshells during their two-hour interview with Oprah. But one of the happier ones was that the couple chose to get married privately—for themselves—before their big royal wedding ceremony.

“I was thinking about it, you know our wedding—three days before our wedding, we got married. No one knows that,” Meghan said. “We called the Archbishop and we just said, look, this thing, this spectacle is for the world. But we want our union between us, so the vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury.”

Meghan added at the end of their interview that after all they went through with the royal family and their exit, the couple has their happy ending now, in California with Archie and their future baby girl (who’s due this summer). “Now we’re actually on the other side, we’re actually not just survived but are thriving,” she said. “This? Miracles. I think that all of those things I was hoping for have happened.”

Ahead of the sit-down, Harry made it clear that it was his decision to protect Meghan and his family and have them step back from their senior royal family roles. She did not push him into it. “It was never walking away—it was stepping back rather than stepping down. It was a difficult environment, as I think as lot of people saw. We all know what the British press can be like, and it was destroying my mental health. I was like, ‘This is toxic.’ So I did what any husband and father would do—I was like, ‘I need to get my family out of here,’” he said.

During his recent interview with James Corden, Harry spoke about what it was like for him and Meghan when they first dated and how his being royal affected the development of their relationship.

“Dating with me, or with any member of the royal family I guess, is kind of flipped upside down,” he said. “All the ‘dates’ become dinners, or watching the TV or chatting at home. And then eventually once you become a couple, then you venture out to dinners, or the cinema and everything else. So everything was done back to front with us. We got to spend an enormous amount of time just the two of us, rather than going to friends’ houses or out for dinner where there were other distractions. There were no distractions, and that was an amazing thing. We went from zero to 60 in the first two months.”
