Doria Ragland has arrived in the U.K. Meghan Markle’s mother, who represented her family on her wedding day last May, is about to be a grandmother. And there is no other sure sign that a baby’s birth is imminent than the arrival of the extended family.
The Sun reported that Ragland has taken all the normal measures to ensure she can stay as long as needed after the birth of her daughter’s baby. She reportedly canceled the Friday yoga class she teaches at a senior citizens’ center in the Los Angeles area, hired a dog walker, and is having a friend put out her trans bins.
“Like all mums, Doria wants to be there for her daughter at this seismic event in her life,” a source told the publication. “She has sometimes worried about being so far away but she is absolutely going to be there for her at the birth. She wants to spend as much time as possible with her first grandchild and has come over for a sustained period of time.”
The source added: “Meghan also wanted to show off her new house to her mum and the two have been enjoying spending time together.”
As Meghan’s popularity has grown over these past few years, the media’s attention has also been drawn to her mother. Doria’s role at the royal wedding last spring—with the noticeable absence of Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle—held its own symbolism, as The New Yorker‘s Doreen St. Felix noted.
“It should not be lost on anyone that, despite the pitiful shenanigans of her ex-husband, Thomas Markle, and the gossiping of her ex-stepchildren, Ragland flew to Heathrow to do what black women do: straighten the mess up”
