During an admittedly anxious period in society, Netflix is bringing the comforts of nostalgia to a couch near you. A series based on the beloved bestselling book series The Babysitter’s Club is on the way. Here’s everything we know about the new show, including who will be playing the titular caretakers.
What is Netflix’s Babysitters Club about?
The 10-episode series, like the original Ann M. Martin novels, will follow the friendship and adventures of Kristy Thomas, Mary-Anne Spier, Claudia Kishi, Stacey McGill, and Dawn Schafer. Together the friends will navigate middle school and their blossoming babysitting business in the fictional town of Stoneybrook, Connecticut. The popular books spawned three spinoff book series, several graphic novels, a ’90s HBO series, and a 1995 film.
Who’s involved?
Newcomers Sophie Grace (Kristy Thomas), Malia Baker (Mary-Anne Spier), Momona Tamada (Claudia Kishi), Shay Rudolph (Stacey McGill), and Xochitl Gomez (Dawn Schafer) will play the five central friends.
Alicia Silverstone (Clueless) has been cast as Elizabeth Thomas-Brewer, described as the “selfless single mother of Kristy Thomas.” Her love interest, Watson Brewer, will be played Mark Feuerstein (Royal Pains).
As for author Ann M. Martin’s involvement? She’s a writer and producer on the series. Rachel Shukert of Glow is showrunner, and Lucia Aniello (Broad City) will executive produce and direct the 10 30-minute episodes.
When can I binge?
There’s no official release date for the project, but it’s set to hit Netflix this year.
