The groundwork has formally been laid for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s transition out of their senior royal family roles. This morning, Buckingham Palace announced when Meghan and Harry’s official transition starts—March 31—and a series of engagements they will do before their exit. Get ready to see a lot of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex during their grand finale as working royal.
Royal reporter Omid Scobie was told that once March ends, the couple will spend a year adjusting to their new lives before they and the British royal family review how well it’s working. “The Royal Family and Sussexes have agreed to an initial 12-month review to ensure the arrangement works for all parties,” a source reportedly told Scobie.
Meghan and Harry will keep all their titles, including those the Queen gave them on their wedding day: the Duke and Duchess of Sussex; the Earl and Countess of Dumbarton; and the Baron and Baroness Kilkeel. Harry will remain sixth in line for the throne, but the couple will also no longer have an office at Buckingham Palace starting April 1. Their foundation team will serve as their UK team.
Royal reporter Carolyn Durand added that she was told by sources the couple would be in the UK “regularly” in the future despite reports to the contrary. “Prince Harry will attend the London Marathon in April in capacity as Patron and #harryandmegan will attend the Invictus Games in May,” she reported.
But before their transition formally begins, Meghan and Harry will be doing several events. Those engagements are:
- February 28: The recording session for Bon Jovi’s song “Unbroken” with the Invictus Games choir, which Harry will attend
- March 5: The Endeavor Awards, which both Meghan and Harry will attend
- March 6: The opening of the Silverstone Experience museum, which Harry will attend
- March 7: The Mountbatten Festival of Music, which both Harry and Meghan will attend
- March 8: Meghan will attend an event for International Women’s Day. Details about what she will be doing will be disclosed later.
- March 9: Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey, where Harry and Meghan will join the royal family.
