The Royal Family Reportedly Feels ‘Sorrow and Shock’ Over Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Interview

It’s been a week and a half since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry gave their bombshell-filled interview to Oprah about their experiences as working royal family members. While the royal family has publicly been terse about their thoughts on the claims the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made, People devoted its cover story to how the Palace is feeling. And those in the Firm are feeling a LOT.

For context, Meghan and Harry revealed in their interview that a member of the royal family (not the Queen or Prince Philip) had concerns that Archie’s skin would be too dark, the Firm refused Archie security, and refused to let Meghan seek treatment when she struggled with suicidal ideation. Harry said the family has an “invisible contract” with the British tabloids and are scared of them. The couple shared much more; you can see a comprehensive rundown of the conversation here.

The Palace has felt very extreme emotions over all that was revealed publicly: a palace source told the magazine that yes, there has been “anger,” but “there were genuinely mixed emotions and deep sorrow and shock there too.”

A close insider added that the situation between Harry and his brother Prince William is particularly upsetting. Harry described their relationship as being one of “space” in his interview with Oprah.

“It’s a sad state of affairs, because William and Harry could have been so brilliant [as a team],” a close insider said. “To think of what they could have achieved together is almost heartbreaking.”

Not as heartbreaking, perhaps, as the fact that the royal family has reportedlynot reached out to Meghan after the interview or said anything against the tabloid attacks on her that continue post-broadcast.

Gayle King spoke on CBS This Morning yesterday about the conversation she had with Meghan and Harry about the Palace’s response to the interview. She revealed that Harry has spoken to his father, Prince Charles, and brother, but they weren’t productive conversations. She added more ominously that no one in the Firm has contacted Meghan.

As she put it:

Well, I did actually call them [Meghan and Harry] to see how they were feeling, it’s true, Harry has talked to his brother and he has talked to his father, too. The word I was given was, those conversations were not productive. But they are glad they at least started a conversation.

I think what is still upsetting to them is that the Palace keeps saying they want to work it out privately but yet they release these false stories that are coming out that are very disparaging against Meghan still. No one in the Royal Family has talked to Meghan yet or at this particular time. And I think it’s frustrating for them to see that it’s a racial conversation about the Royal Family when all they wanted all along was for the royals to intervene and tell the press to stop with the unfair, inaccurate, false stories that definitely have a racial slant. And until you can acknowledge that, I think it’s going to be hard to move forward. But they both want to move forward with this. They want healing in this family. At the end of the day, it’s Harry’s family

She also addressed the couple’s thoughts on the bullying investigation the Palace has opened into a two-year-old complaint filed against Meghan. She stressed that Meghan has evidence to back up “everything” she said during her interview with Oprah.

As King said:

The bullying thing was raised in 2018 and now there’s an ongoing investigation about bullying for Meghan Markle when anyone who has worked with her will tell you exactly who she is—you know, she’s really a very sweet, caring person. And, as I say, Meghan has documents to back up everything she said on Oprah’s interview. Everything.

The family has to acknowledge that there are issues and right now, no one is acknowledging. Houston, we have a problem here! That’s really all they want. They want a conversation.
